Animal Welfare Certified
Culver Duck is located in the heart of Amish Country in Northern Indiana and part of an honest, hardworking community of farmers. Ducks are born in Culver’s own state-of-the-art hatchery, and raised cage-free in spacious, open-air barns with plenty of room to roam and ample food and water. They follow a never-ever program (never administered antibiotics or hormones). Owned by veterinarian, Dr. Joe Jurgielewicz, Culver Duck is raising the bar for humane care — in fact, they’re the only duck company to have earned the Animal Welfare certification. Their animal welfare program is based on the “Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare.” Animals have good welfare when their physical, emotional and behavioral needs are met.
White Pekin Breed
Culver has its own pedigree and genetics program as well as a breeding operation to ensure the best traits and qualities of the White Pekin breed are passed down the line. Dr. Joe even developed a precise feed for his flock — a proprietary blend that provides optimum nutrition while maintaining a consistent final product. The White Pekin breed (also known as Long Island Duck) has a mild flavor with more juiciness and tenderness than other kinds of duck, and without the greasiness or gaminess sometimes associated with this protein. It’s also a healthy choice; duck is lower in fat than most other proteins, and the fat itself is very similar in nutrients to olive oil, made up of mostly monounsaturated healthy fats that help lower cholesterol.
At Culver Duck, 100% of the duck is used with zero waste: all parts are available including inedibles. Some is used in the pet food industry, and feathers are used for down. Culver Duck maintains the Global Traceable Down Standard (Global TDS), which ensures that down in garments and other household and commercial products comes from a responsible source that respects animal welfare and can be transparently traced.
