How to Grill Tri-Tip Steak

Tri-tip rewards patience: a hard sear, then a slow finish over indirect heat to 150°F.

Directions

  1. Oil the steak and season both sides with salt, pepper, and olive oil.
  2. Preheat the grill to 350°F.
  3. Place the tri-tip in the center of the grill over direct heat.
  4. Cook for 5 minutes, then flip.
  5. Cook for 5 more minutes, then move to indirect heat.
  6. Remove after 20-30 minutes, or when the internal temperature reaches 150°F.
  7. Rest before slicing against the grain.
