Thaw Beef in 15 Minutes

Quick-thaw frozen beef by running cold water over the sealed package in a bowl for about 15 minutes.

A Crowd Cow Field Guide

Whether you forgot to plan ahead or just don't want to wait, this 15-minute thaw gets a frozen steak ready to cook fast.

Set up the bowl

Place the frozen steak, still in its packaging, in a bowl. Set the bowl in the sink.

Run cold water for 15 minutes

Run cold water over the steak for 15 minutes. Cold water only — warm water encourages bacterial growth.

Check and cook

Gently press into the steak with your finger to check for fully thawed spots. Continue running cold water until the steak is completely thawed. Remove from the packaging, pat dry, and cook.
